Jazu

The Work of Poetry

Stabbing the eyes, the white light shines

The contour of things fades and disappears

She stands motionlessly, speaks and speaks

She speaks in the eye-stabbing light

She speaks the words with no shape

As dreaming a dream with no sight

Someone comes, someone goes

The sounds, the foot-stepping sounds

The crowd talking sounds

Someone seems to approach

People come and go, and squeeze in the house

Talking about things

About nothing but the things

The shelf leans against the wall

Behind the wall a chamber shows

In the chamber a row of windows

The sun shines right through

The chamber bright, as if the chamber cut

From the entire house

Being in the chamber is like being outside

Jazu stands in front of the shelf, having a feeling that

Someone is about to step out

Stepping down the stairs, she turns around

As if there is a mirror, her hands on her waist, and the skirt sways

A tune rises

As if she hums out a humble piece of somebody’s life

Jazu hums, turns around, she can be like this

The ball is about to begin, people watch her step down the stairs

Her red gloves, elegant in every tip of her fingers

Men move forward, her chin lifts slightly

She’d like to walk down the stairs herself, this is her statement

Jazu smiles cunningly, as if this is not her

The tune becomes familiar

What more could I say? I met her the other night, and that was all

What came before is like the ship that has sailed away,

Towards the line between the sky and the sea

And will be gone beyond the line between the sky and the sea

If I must say, I say like an amnesia patient

Halt and catch phrases in the ellipsis

Nothing much about it

Jazu wakes up, as everyday before

She wakes up, in her bed

The feeling is still with her, like someone she’s so familiar with

Not anyone she knows, Jazu is almost certain

But the feeling is so familiar, so close

As if there is truly something between them

Only that Jazu does not remember at all
